Why dont these highjacked tankers just drop hand grenades on the pirates below?

TheNoBullExpress asked:

Here these guys pull up to a ship that is 40 stories tall. How come the pirates aren’t surprised by 40 machine guns suddenly blazing away?
hand grenades arent going to barely dent a ships hull

Alot of these ships are un-armed. Maybe they should start arming themselves.

Well the pirates have been using RPG’s (Rocket Propelled Grenades), which does put a bit of risk on a ship.

I don’t think you want to drop hand grenades down next to the hull of a naval vessel. If you puncture the hull near the water line, the ship could list or sink. Maybe not the first time, but repeated blasts in the same spot would damage the hull over time.

Most ships in that area have armed naval escorts, but not all.

I wonder why they do not have armed guards on board. And what is to stop countries who have had their ships taken from sending in their navy and reclaiming them? It’s not like the pirates can exactly hide these things. It makes no sense to me that pirates are running amok and no one is doing anything about it.

Drop grenades on 500,000 tons of crude oil? Yeah, great plan.

many of these ships carry highly explosive cargo. so doing anything like that is not really a smart thing to do

They are hijacking oil tankers carrying 100 million barrels of oil. The hijackers have rocket launchers. What do you think the hijackers would do if they were attacked? You got it. There would be 100 million barrels of crude pouring into the sea. And lets not forget the lives that would be lost. So far, the hijackers only want the ransom. Amazingly, no one has been killed. Everyone is trying to keep it that way.

they come up in the blind spot or shadow of the radar, from behind similar a cars blind spot, from the back and to the side. preferably you may want to dock with the ship and have pirates climbing up to the deck before they know you are there. oil tankers dropping grenades off the side is not smart. even wheat dust is highly explosive, many other chemicals they carry as well won’t like grenades.

    2) the seamen are not trained fighters, you’ve seen the history channel, they’ve talked about putting armed gaurds on some ships. 1) it’s expensive. 2) it raises the chance for violence, many pirates just take the safe or ransom the crew but if there’s a fire fight they’ll probably kill the crew as well.

    3) i’m sure it’s a rare occurence as well. if you own a shipping company and get attacked by pirates once every forty years. it’s not cost effective to have all these expensive guns and soldiers trained in thier use and paid hazard or combat pay. When the majority of those soldiers will never see a pirate.

    4) you also have to consider legal issues. these ships go around the world to ports in varrying countries many of which don’t allow private citizens to posses guns. you say we need guns to stop bad guys, but they say how do we know you aren’t a bad guy. You have no official authority, you were not appointed by thier military. you are just some shmuck with a gun. your ship can easily be a pirate ship. There’s no reason for them to trust you with that right any more than anyone else.

Why don’t they raise shields and launch photon torpedo to blow the pirates up?

Dude, why do you think all gas stations have “NO Smoking” sign? Does a cigarette itself can break the gas station structures into pieces?
